SOTD: “Obsessed and so Obsure” By Matt Berry

In case it was not obvious, the name for the website came from this particular track, I just omitted the “so”. Although the inspiration came more from the song title over the lyrical content. The title I thought gave a good summary of my interest in multimedia. Since I was a little kid I always looked too weird counter cultures and obscure entertainment for creative drive. I am pretty obsessive about my multimedia consumption as well, although I hesitate to do such a thing, I often define myself through my interests when searching through my own sense of self.

I first became aware of Matt Berry through his comedic work, specifically “Snuffbox” and the “IT Crowd”. I have followed his career since then and I find him to be one of the best, and underappreciated, figures within British Comedy. It was through a good friend that he mentioned that Matt Berry has also been creating music. I knew he had done the music through his work on Snuffbox but was unaware he had full albums. My assumption was that it would be mostly comedic songs, and although some do have a sense of comedy, especially in his first release “Opium”. I was pleasantly surprised by the serious tone, the introspective lyrics, and the romanticism within. Since his first release I have been following his career, and I truly believe he gets better with each consecutive release. The track I posted is from his most recent album.

This track is a good example of Matt Berry’s talent to balance some of his comedic backing along with his sense of romanticism and tragedy.  It has some semi-surreal lyricism, which is also a trait of some of Matt Berry’s tracks. Although, I don’t think this is his strongest track it still serves as an example of his talent. It should also be noted that Berry, has a very unique and strong voice that gives him a strong presence. This was apparent in both his comedic work as well as his music career. Even before I was aware of his music career I was quite enamored with his voice. Matt Berry is a unique once in a lifetime type of talent and I am happy in my travels to have found other people as interested in his work as I am.

I  decided to make a quick list of my top ten favorite tracks of his, although it is a bit hard, given I like almost every track he has released.

  1. Seasons on Fire
  2. Take My Hand (Used for the theme in “Toast of London”)
  3. Opium
  4. Fallen Angel
  5. Love is a Fool
  6. The Peach & The Melon
  7. October Sun
  8. Devil Inside Me
  9. Say it Again
  10. This Whole Life is Beneath Me *Only released in the TV show “Toast of London” if this short musical interlude was made into a full track I guarantee it would be one of his best.

Mattberry

Obsessed and so obscure
I felt my head decapitate
Without a sense of it all

I’m stuck between two trees
I must’ve been a hundred feet
But had no fear of it all

I think my heart now beats for three
You and me and Christopher Lee

I’m paid to aid escape
But where the hell am I to go
To get away from it all

There’s blood across your face
You’ve been amongst the animals
Yet you deny it all

I went into the woods
And found myself a laser gun
Before blasting you all

I think my heart now beats for three
You and me and Christopher Lee

I’m paid to aid escape
But where the hell am I to go
To get away from it all

Obsessed and so obscure
I felt my head decapitate
Without a sense of it all

Stuck between two trees
I must’ve been a hundred feet
But had no fear of it all

I think my heart now beats for three
You and me and Christopher Lee

I think my heart now beats for three
You and me and the BBC
